Reedley College Role Language in Daily Life Essay

Prompt: I’d like you to reflect on the role language has played in your own life. There are numerous paths you might take to produce this narrative: you may explore your earliest memories of language, or a time when you misunderstood language, you might reflect on learning language or forgetting.

Expectations: As our models have done, I expect that your reflection will take form as a narrative-type essay. Because it is an essay, there should still be some adherence to the formatting of an essay (introduction, and conclusion included), but beyond that, remember that a narrative essay is a story, an anecdote written with a purpose. The purpose here is to reflect on how language has played a role in your life.

Audience: Your audience for this essay is a young person or loved one. This young person or loved one could be your own child, a sibling, or other family member, or a significant other. But it could also be yourself, in the past. Or you could write to a future child. This isn’t a letter per se, but instead the passing on of a story in written form.
