Reform movements happened a lot in the United States of America and especially in the 19th century. A lot of movements started happening that were led by women; this was so because women were not treated equally to men and they felt that a lot of their rights were ignored. This made them hold gatherings and seek support to change the nature of things and have their voices heard. The issues that they tackled and wanted to change included the barriers, both social and institutional that limited the rights of women. The boy child was more favored than the girl child and the women wanted to be given equal rights to men and treated the same so that they could have access to similar opportunities as the men. This included equal family responsibilities, similar economic opportunities and a voice in political debates; they felt that they had as much a say in the way the country was supposed to run as any man (Larkin, 2016).

They wanted to be accorded the same educational opportunities because at the time the education of men was more valued and women were valued at the home front. They also wanted the freedom to participate in voting and they created an association known as the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). The association sought to change federal law so that it can include women and they can have their rights. The association especially opposed the 15th amendment since it excluded women (“The Women’s Rights Movement, 1848–1920 | US House of Representatives: History, Art & Archives”, 2017). These are some of the reasons why women took such a prominent role in the reform movement.
