Flier Assignment

A flier is simply a one-page, 8 ½” X 11” poster that can be folded and mailed to customers or posted on bulletin boards. The key to an effective flier is simplicity and functionality.

Instructions

  1. Choose a business or an event.
  2. Identify the purpose of your flier. Write a statement (more than one sentence) that answers
    1. What are you trying to do; inform, create a record, or persuade?
    2. What do you want your readers to do, think, or feel after reading the flier?
  3. Identify the audience for your flier. Write a paragraph that describes
    1. Who are you trying to reach with your flier?
    2. What do you want the audience to do as a result of receiving this communication?
    3. What factors might influence the audience’s response?
  4. Create a flier
  1. Use a fictional business such as a daycare, dog-walking, or computer repair business that you could operate out of your home, OR
  2. Use an event such as a fundraiser or social gathering for a neighborhood association, sports team, or non-profit organization.

Use the information in the following table to create an effective flier.

Use a simple design

Visual

Include a visual that attracts attention AND reinforces content

Typefaces

Use no more than two easily legible typefaces

Capitalization/

Bolding

Use capitalization and bold print to increase legibility where necessary

Writing style

Use short, direct, bulleted phrases rather than complete sentences Include only key details

Sequence

Present information in a logical sequence

Contact/Company information

Provide full contact information

Design

Revise to ensure there are NO typos or mechanical errors


Submit the following:

  1. A complete statement of the purpose of the flier (see #2 above)
  2. A paragraph describing the audience (see #3 above)
  3. A flier (start on a new page)

FORMAT for Purpose and Audience Analysis section: Include your name, instructor name, course/section number, and date in upper left corner, 12 point font, single-space, flush left with blank line between paragraphs (do not indent paragraphs), clearly identify the different parts of the assignment using headings and subheadings, (statement of purpose and audience analysis on the first page, then actual flier should start on a separate page). Save file as a .doc or .docx file (do not save as .wps, .pdf, zip, or .odt).
