Women were fighting for far more than the vote in the early days of the feminist movement. In addition to fighting for external control–the vote, the right to hold public office, etc.–they were also fighting for control of their own bodies. Birth control was a central issue in the fight for women’s rights. Margaret Sanger, a public health nurse, was one of the biggest proponents of this movement.
Why was family planning such an important social issue at this time? In what ways is the use of birth control related to the empowerment of women and the advancement of women’s rights, beyond the obvious expedient that it allows them to have control over their bodies?
