ENGL205 Francis Marion University American Indian Stories Discussion

1. This week, you need to read the selections by Booker T. Washington and W. E. B DuBois (who is reacting to Washington). You also need to read the Native American stories by Zitkala Sa, (who also is known as Gertrude Bonnin Simmons). The selections this week have a lot to do with the various cultures in the United States interacting, and these selections are interesting in light of the way our multicultural society has evolved in the years following these early stories. I’ll be interested to hear your reactions to these readings.

2. Post at least two responses to the readings on the discussion board (as usual). I hope you will find that you enjoy posting / discussing more than the bare minimum that is required for the course. It seems to me that the more students write, think, and discuss the readings, the richer their experience is in the course (and the better they do in the course).

3. The midterm exam will become available on Friday of this week, and it will be available for one week. It is a proctored exam, and it is timed for two hours. You will need to know the titles and authors of the selections, to be able to identify characters and incidents in the texts, to recognize important quotes from the selections and be able to explain them (who is talking, what’s the context for the statement or incident, and why is it important). There is also a brief essay on the exam that will ask you to compare or contrast works or to talk about a common theme in several works.
