ASSIGNMENT: EDITING EXERCISE ONE
One of the most important aspects of organizing technical writing is including topic sentences in your paragraphs. A topic sentence lets the reader know what the whole paragraph is about. You can find an excellent discussion of the importance of topic sentences in technical writing, as well as examples here (Links to an external site.).
A time when topic sentences are particularly important is when you must summarize information, which happens often in the working world, particularly in technical fields. To practice this skill in a fun way that also prepares you to write your own autobiography, your job in this exercise is to edit a celebrity biography down to 200 words.Your choices are included in the links below.
For this assignment, you will have to COMPLETELY REWRITE the biography to make the short version IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Remember, cutting and pasting someone else’s words, even from Wikipedia, is plagiarism.
The goal of this exercise is to edit for a major theme or hook that you can use to summarize this person’s life in so few words. You will have to do the same when you write your own biography.
It’s NOT OKAY to start your exercise with a sentence like “Michael Jackson was born in 19…” This sentence doesn’t establish a hook or theme for the biography. Instead, use the topic sentence of your biography to establish a main idea such as a discussion of Jackson’s successes and failures, or his turbulent personal life. All of the details you choose to include in the summary should include ONLY details related to the hook or theme you have chosen.
When you have finished your 200 word (or less) paragraph, submit it to the discussion board called Post Editing Exercise One. Case Studies and Editing Exercises will not be graded until the end of the semester. You will turn in all 6 of these assignments at once during the last week of class. But I encourage you to post at least part of your response to the discussion forum. I will give general feedback to the class about the postings. This feedback should not only help you revise the exercise for the end of the semester, but it will also help you practice your skills for the for the major assignment.
