For the Week 2 Assignment you will submit a draft of your research topic. In this workshop forum you will work collaboratively with your classmates to develop your topic. Read the instructions for the Week 2 Writing Assignment, and then post your topic using the format “I am studying _____ because I want to find out _____ so that my reader can better understand _____”. Additionally, as required in the Week 2 Assignment, be sure to explain the problem you are trying to solve through your research and which humanities disciplines will be relevant to your topic.
Requirements: Post a first draft of your topic by Day 3. Review your classmates’ posts, and provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers by Day 5 (see below for additional guidance on writing a good response). After your classmates critique your topic, defend it or revise it in a follow-up post by Day 7.
Guided Response: This forum is a collaborative writing workshop, which provides students with the opportunity to try out ideas and receive feedback from their peers. It is not a traditional “discussion” or conversation. Rather it is a place for constructive criticism. In your responses to your classmates, consider some of the following questions: Is the topic clear and precise? Is the research question something worth studying (i.e., will it create new knowledge and/or solve a significant problem)? Is humanities (as opposed to the natural or social sciences) really the best method for answering the research question? Has the student correctly categorized their topic into one or more humanities discipline? Are there other relevant disciplines or theoretical perspectives they have overlooked? Might any of the five critical theories from week 1 (Feminist, Marxist, Psychoanalytic, Mythological, or Historicist) be relevant to the paper topic? Etc.
