University of California, San Diego Art Cultures Discussion

The final exam essay will be similar in form and content to the essays you have been writing during the quarter. Please note that the length is slightly longer at 500-800 words. But only slightly. You should pepper your essay with quotations from assigned reading and references to art as you deem necessary. Be sure to use footnotes or endnotes for references, just as we have done during the quarter. ESSAYS THAT OMIT CITATION WILL RECEIVE AN F AND WILL NOT BE GRADED.

Here is the link to the two citation systems I recommend. The Turabian system and the University of Chicago system are nearly identical. The websites linked below organize the material in different ways; so, consult the one you find more readable: https://www.library.georgetown.edu/tutorials/research-guides/turabian-footnote-guide (Links to an external site.) OR http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/turabian/turabian_citationguide.html

Pick one of the prompts below and write an essay between 500-800 words. Please double space and don’t forget your footnotes.

1. The theme of this course has been divided culture. In Week 5 we read an essay by David Trend in which he argued that culture helps to determine the boundaries by which a culture decides who belongs and who does not. Agree or disagree with Trend’s idea, by referencing at least three distinct assigned readings during the quarters. Where such reference will make your argument stronger, you may also include relevant historical details or references to artwork.

2. Culture helps a people to transmit its values from one generation to the next. Art is an important means of conveying those values. In a period of divided culture we might expect the art to reflect division about values. In your essay, consider the role of art as described by Lippman in A Preface to Morality (Week 5 assigned reading). Then highlight one piece of art from each week of the course* that you think indicates moral values being contested. Be sure to explain the underlying context of each piece as well as the moral values you believe to be at stake.

*–The goal of this requirement is so that you cannot select three pieces about AIDS or three about feminism, etctera.
