We have read two different stories of love suicides this semester, in Monzaemon’s “The Love Suicides at Amijima” and in Aphra Behn’s Oronooko. How are these stories similar and how are they different? What cultural context is necessary to understand them? What circumstances and cultural or personal values motivate the characters? Why do they do it? Are we meant to sympathize with their decision or judge it? (Or both?) How do you know?
