The Impact of Residential Segregationsoc 5 D

Consider how the issues discussed in this unit’s reading are related to the overall impact of race-based, ethnicity-based, and class-based interaction patterns in our society.

For this discussion, answer the following questions.

·(Chapter 21 in Rethinking the Color Line), Douglas S. Massey highlights the persistence of residential segregation in American society. What does Massey mean when he states that “barriers to spatial mobility are barriers to social mobility” (p. 159)?

·How are patterns of segregation different for different minority groups? What are the consequences of these patterns for segregated communities and groups and for society as a whole? Discuss these patterns and suggest potential solutions to reduce residential segregation of minority communities. Relate your response to Chapter 21 in Rethinking the Color Line or to Chapters 5–7 in Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class.
