Research Paper
This is a two part project:
A) You’ll produce a minimum 4 page research paper on a popular social movement of your choosing. Your paper must be a critical analysis of your chosen topic, based in the appropriate theory and methodology, with summary and description kept to a bare minimum. The focus here is on the critical analysis of the movement. The topic is open. You could choose the civil rights movement, the pro-life movement, or the women’s suffrage movement – or a lesser known movement like the ‘free the nipple campaign’ if you desire. It is entirely up to you, but just needs to be classified as a social movement. Your job is to help create a deeper understanding of this topic. Most of us see social movements on TV or the internet and make sofa couch judgments without really understanding what is happening. So – explain it to us!
Questions that should be answered in your paper:
How does your movement represent race, gender, and social class?
Who is attempted to be persuaded by this movement?
Who is left out or excluded from this?
Is anyone offended by this? Why or why not?
Has your topic become a popular because it is successful? Or for some other reason?
In general, what does this movement’s popularity say about our values and beliefs?
B) The second portion of your assignment is to create a visual of your chosen topic. You can use prezi, Powerpoint, canva, youtube, or any other means you choose. But total it should take the viewer about 2-3 minutes to view this presentation. Choose pictures, songs, lyrics, or anything else you choose to give the viewer an idea of what you are discussing in your paper. With each image or artifact you choose, give a brief overview of the message being told through that.
Details and logistics:
Your research should be supported with a minimum of 3 scholarly sources (only one of which can be an assigned course reading) and 2 popular or primary sources. These popular or primary sources could be a magazine, television show, or gossip website – those two should not be academic, but still needs to be cited.
4 pages minimum with a 2-3 minute visual presentation
Double spaced
11 or 12 point Times New Roman Font
Cover Sheet and Citations page (not included in the 4 page minimum)
MLA or APA format
