The main reason of the DSM-5 is to be used by health care and psychology professionals in the United States working with mental disorder clients and others that need to be diagnosed. The DSM-5 contains many symptoms and other descriptions that are used with clients (APA, 2013).It provides a common language for clinicians to communicate about their patients and establishes consistent and reliable diagnoses that can be used in the research of mental disorders. It is also important to assist trained clinicians in the diagnosis of their patients’ mental disorders as part of a case formulation assessment that leads to a fully informed treatment plan for each individual. Also in order to diagnose an individual with any type of mental disorder, several needs and understanding need to be met and certain things need to be considered as well. Also develops into a treatment plan for the client who their psychology professions can use when working with them.

There are several strengths of the DSM-5 and the two that I choose to discuss are The Basics and the organizational use of the manual. The basics focus more on how families and clients were involved in the revisions of the mental disorder and especially more with the clients who had mental disorder. Individuals that were involved with this descriptions were asked simple questions based on their past experience and also individuals who had many symptoms. The organizational use of the manual is designed to provide a practical guide to using DSM-5, particularly in clinical practice (APA, 2013) It is also considered strength because it makes and helps the psychologist to focus on each part of the diagnosis and also focus on each part of the symptoms. The clinical psychologist is also able to divide the symptoms and the diagnosis to understand the client before assessment. The manual deals with things that are more helpful and necessary for the individual (APA, 2013).

There are also several limitations of the DSM-5, and the two that I selected are DSM-5 being used by unprofessional and less use in the court system. Psychology professionals that are using the DSM-5 system to work with clients should be careful and aware of the information provided. It is considered a limitation because individuals that are not professionals may be using the DSM-5 and it should be seen as illegal. The DSM-5 is used to help with assessment and treatment plan when clinicians are working with their clients. Individuals working in the courthouse are not professional psychologist so the DSM-5 may be use differently and also use with a trial case. It may be useful in the courthouse but not as much as it is use assessing a client with a clinician.

The DSM-5 is very important to use in the field of psychology and I believe that the DSM-5 should only be use by professionals and professional only. It is important to follow the DSM-5 when working with clients. I would use the DSM-5 in my practice when I am working on an assessment plan or on a treatment plan for a client. I will also look back on the DSM-5 when I notice any type of changes in my client or if my client has any type of negative behavior. Client’s behavior changes all he time and working as a clinical psychologist can be very difficult and challenging. There are also many ways to circumvent the limitations in the DSM-5, if a clinical psychologist is having a difficult in an assessment, they can try a different technique to avoid that circumvent or follow up with different data.
