Paraphrasing Exercise

Practice paraphrasing the following texts.  Remember to read the passage thoroughly enough to understand the true meaning.  Then hide the passage and write down notes.  Finally, check that you have all the main ideas (assuming you need all the ideas to make your point in your paper).  Then create longer sentences from your notes and combine the sentences effectively.  Don’t forget to cite!

1.  “Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes.”

2.  “Across the country, the nation’s top students are feeling a pain that comes in the form of a dreaded thin envelope.  The most selective universities in the country this year posted record-low admission rates that dipped into the single digits.  As colleges such as Harvard and Princeton released their rates, they also boasted the diverse backgrounds of successful applicants, who include students of color and international candidates.”

3.  “Of the more than 1000 bicycling deaths each year, three-fourths are caused by head injuries. Half of those killed are school-age children. One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbs the shock and cushions the head.
