This is what was written in choosing the topic….

Critical theory refers to set of concepts or theories on which analysis of a literature work reflects on to understand different aspects. As earlier learned, these theories include structuralism, formalism, new historicism, Marxism and postcolonial theory. For my selected topic, I intended to use the new historicism theory in criticizing the text; “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”. For the selected topic, I will approach it by first understanding the definitions of major literary terms.

Stephen Greenblatt developed the term new historicism. New historicism theory seeks to identify the meaning in a literary text by dwelling on its historical perspective, period, the prevailing ideas, the occurrence and the assumptions of the particular era when the text was written. This critic emphasized on the concept of power and the manner in which culture reoccur in the work of literature, how it produces and reproduces in the text.

I intended to use various additional sources in research of this topic. These include scholarly written materials both secondary and primary sources, past research papers, essays on this topic as well as books on literature and criticism such as “New Historicism and other Old Fashion Topics” by Brook Thomas. I will use written books on critical perspective on the text a portrait of the artist as a young man which is available in the library and online.
