Essay #2 (Narration) 10% Minimum Length: 500 words https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/04/ A narration essay is one in which you’re telling a story. Question: do you have to tell the truth with your narration? Well. It depends. You can write a heart-warming account of your childhood, or you can totally invent a story about something fantastical and unlikely to ever transpire. The choice is yours. The key is to tell your story in a way that captivates your audience and keeps them hanging on every word. What makes people keep listening? It’s often all about authenticity. Tell your story. Reveal things about yourself. Let yourself be raw and exposed. Show your humanity. Your audience will reach out and meet you more than half-way. Elements to include: • engaging “hook” in the opening paragraph “in medias res” opening (an illustrative scene) • primary thesis (what is this story or narrative about) • why does it matter? • a bit of background • develop the characters and the situation – make them unforgettable • incorporate “flash memory” scenes that build the story • body paragraphs have a topic sentence that ties to primary thesis • body paragraphs transition from idea to idea / scene to scene • conclusion either gives closure or leaves the reader wanting more
