ENG100 Bowie State University Deforestation Forum Journal Entry

Read the following article on one of the classes’s chosen topics: deforestation. Before you read, preview it so that you have a sense of what to expect (and if your predictions are wrong that is fine because the you are actively not passively reading when you run across sections or ideas that you didn’t expect). Before you read, scan the article for the following: length, section headings, pictures, and graphs to get a sense of topic and content. Think about what genre this article is a part of (the type of text – in this case what kind of newspaper article is it?) and what the schemas (clues to how to read the article – like the word “laundry” in the book’s example) helped you make sense of the article.

Finally write a 100 word journal entry (reply to this thread) answering any of the following questions (you don’t need to answer them all, just the ones that seem relevant to you, but answer at least one of the first four questions):

What did this reading strategy (previewing) allow me to notice in the text?

How might previewing be useful as I read texts in my other courses?

How did previewing change the experience of reading the test?

What schemas (clues to how to read the article – like the word “laundry” in the book’s example) helped me make sense of the article?

What did you learn from the article (big or small) that you didn’t know before?

What did you read in the article that you already knew (again, big or small)?
