Respond to at least two of your peers who chose a different quote from the Shapiro article than you did. Comment on the solid points in their argument, pointing out why the points they made are valid. Finally explain how, no matter the varied views of standardized assessments, each teacher and caregiver can uphold their responsibility to conduct assessments in an ethical manner. Cite specific examples from the Joint Position Statement of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) document (pages 2-4) that support how your classmate’s point of view regarding standardized testing aligns with this statement. 5 sentences or more.

Explain, in your own words, what standardized testing is and how it is different from achievement testing.

Standardized testing is formal testing that tests children’s knowledge with the exact same questions, material, instructions, and scoring procedures for a particular age group. Achievement tests can be standardized. However, achievement tests typically test children’s to display their comprehension and progress on material they have actually learned. Whereas, standardized test do not necessarily test on what the children have actually been taught, but rather what they should have been taught. “Achievement tests measure the extent to which children have learned after having completed some instruction or learning opportunity” (Howard & Aiken, 2015, Section 9.1).

Compare and contrast how the different types standardized testing differs from the other forms of assessment discussed throughout this course. Provide specific examples and support your points with information from the course text.

Standardized testing differs from other assessments because they are commercially created. Whereas, many of the assessments we’ve learned about are teacher-created. Most standardized tests have right or wrong answers. Many other assessments, such as performance-based assessment or curriculum-based assessment, depend on observation and/or checklists. Anecdotal records and event sampling are teacher-created, observational assessments that produce written results, which could lead to educational recommendations and intervention. Typically most of the other assessments we’ve learned about throughout this course have been in more of a natural setting as oppose to standardized assessments which seems to be in a more obvious testing environment.

Explain why you support or agree with the quote and provide specific details as to why. Support this portion of your post with the text and at least one scholarly resource.

“When seen from the desk-chair of a classroom pupil, children are robbed of the individuality that comes from differentiated instruction.” – Jordan Shapiro

Although in a typical classroom children are taught the same material from one teacher, giving standardized tests robs the children of their individual abilities and knowledge. These tests, from my point of view, seem to generalize children’s knowledge without considering their individualism. Shapiro’s quote gives the child’s perspective, which I agree with. Ignacio Estrada said, “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn” (Waters, 2015, para. 1).

Propose a solution to the standardized achievement testing debate. How do you feel children should be assessed in both early childhood and beyond? Provide a rationale for your solution.

I think early childhood achievement test being done observationally are great! I think, with children learning most –at that age- through moving through their environments, observation makes the most sense. Once children get into the talking and communication stages, verbal testing and curriculum-linked testing are great ways to test comprehension of words and reading. Beyond early childhood, students should be tested similarly to how they are in college – with a mid-term and a comprehensive final exam – on the material they have learned throughout the year. Curriculum-based assessment makes the most sense which “involves measuring if students learned what the curriculum aimed to teach, and in doing so, more effectively guiding future instruction” (Howard & Aiken, 2015, Section 7.1).
