Subject: Holidays & Seasons (Winter); Science

Materials and Preparation I would use:

  • Snowmen at Night by: Caralyn Buehner
  • Create a Snowmen worksheet
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Black paper
  • Crayons
  • Circle What Belongs ( worksheet with circles cut out)

Introduction: I would ask each student what is his or her favorite thing to do in the winter. I would have them share what’s favorite thing about winter. I would tell the students that today they would be learning about winter.

Teacher Modeling: I would read the story Snowmen at Night to the students. Discuss what the weather is like and different activities the snowmen do throughout the story. Also, discuss winter weather clothing such as long pants, big coats, hats, gloves, boots, and scarves. I would ask each student why he or she thinks that they need to wear this kind of clothing in the winter.

Modeling Work:

  • I would tell each student that they would be making their own snowmen.
  • Give each student the build a Snowmen sheet that I provided.
  • In front of the class, cut out three circles on your own sheet that was pass out. Glue each of the circles down, adding buttons that you made from the black paper, and draw the snowmen face. Independent Working Time: Students will complete the craft independently. I will monitor each student work throughout the craft time. Assessment: I would give each student a copy of Circle What Belongs and have him or her identify what clothing is appropriate for winter. Review: I would review what we learn by having each student stand up and show the class their snowmen. I would have them name one activity that their snowmen would do in the winter.
