Considerable controversy has risen in recent years over the increased diagnosis of children with ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). What is your opinion about the reason why diagnosis for ADHD has risen in recent decades? Do you feel that this is an accurate diagnosis of children today, or do you agree with individuals who claim that it largely misdiagnosed? What are possible issues that may arise from over-or underdiagnosis? Support your reasoning with information from the text and other course materials.

This is a ‘hot topic’ for us to discuss this week. Be sure to support any personal views with facts. It is easy to get caught up in sharing our views on a topic we have a lot of interest in and share our views. For this week I want to remind you to rely on your book and any other academic sources to support your views.

One question to answer first, is how much has ADHD risen over the past few decades? Has it risen at a higher pace than other mental health issues? Why would this be important to consider?

The increased diagnosis of ADHD in children has aroused controversies speculating the accuracy of these diagnosis and the medications utilized to treat the most studied mental disorder in the world (D. Connor, 2011). Feldman explains how the necessary criteria needed to be diagnosed with ADHD has become less restrictive (Feldman, pg. 489). He further explains that the DSM-5, or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, has broaden the diagnosis of ADHD in its most recent revision that was performed in 2013. This broader classification encompasses a wider range of people which birthed the controversy over the meticulousness of its diagnosis. Looking back at some historical background, ADHD was rarely diagnosed in children before the 1970s (D. Connor, 2011). That number percentile has increased substantially at an alarming rate, bringing disagreements amongst psychologists of the true definitive characteristics considered for ADHD. The new revision of the DSM-5 might be too expansive and another revision is probably needed. The issues of over diagnosing this disorder can bring is over dependency of treatment prescriptions and stimulants as well as the increased abuse of such drugs (D. Connor, 2011). Whereas the issues of under diagnosing the disorder could potentially hindered the individuals who truly suffer from ADHD get the adequate help and treatment needed to ensure their success academically, intra-personally, and in society as a whole.

In my opinion from past few decades ADHD risen by a lot percentage. According to the Psychology Today 15% has been risen in recent decades for ADHD. I think the main reason behind this diagnosis is we don’t see children playing outside more than sitting inside in front of TV or computers and some are being on their video games as well. As we see in diagnosis that it has been risen than before because 90’s kids were not like that. They used to play outside not just being indoor. Even i was born at that time we used to play in the parks, even our parents used to convince us to go out and play. I think this diagnosis of children today is perfectly accurate because we don’t need any surveys to prove this, we are seeing everything in front of us everyday that we barely see kids out that is one of the main causes of having so many diseases in very young age. I think some issues will be arisen over this diagnosis that I mentioned earlier that our parents used to force us to go our and play. Some people may disagree with that they goes to work in the morning or in the evening, so they don’t have enough time to take their kids out and also they don’t want to send their kids alone as crime is arising as well. They might say i doesn’t mean if their are not going out for play that means they will diagnosis from ADHD but i think outdoors helps kids to keep their brain active. Also i have question “What are some symptoms that helps us to see if the child has this kind of disorder?”

2.2 reply to peersI think that both psychotherapy and biomedical therapy are effective in their own respective ways. Psychotherapy is a therapy where a therapist uses psychological techniques to help someone overcome psychological difficulties and disorders, and resolve problems in living or bring about personal growth (Feldman, 2017). Meanwhile biomedical therapy relies on drugs and medical procedures to improve psychological functioning (Feldman, 2017). So this means that psychotherapy will be used when there is a psychological issue, and biomedical therapy is used when there is a biological factor involved. These are two different needs, that is why I said they are both effective in their own ways. Although, there can be instances when both needs need to addressed. For example if a patient has psychological orders but needs biologically based drug therapy, someone can use both perspectives in helping to treat a patient. I think there is no treatment better than the other because even if we had biomedical therapy for example, it would treat symptoms but not treat the underlying problems from which people are suffering (Feldman, 2017). If we only use psychotherapy, there can be a biologically caused psychological problem, that it wouldn’t be able to treat. I think that they work together, and there is no definite right answer. It all depends on the patient and their needs.
2.3 reply peersI believe that psychotherapy is better and more effective to improve the well being of a person, but depends the case, and also because personally I don’t like the use of drugs and especially having to take them constantly. Although that doesn’t mean I don’t support medication, because I also believe there are solutions for treatment. For Example, anxiety is something that psychotherapy can solve in a matter of time, but it’s called cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in which is highly effective at treating anxiety disorders, this makes people learn to change those thought problems in a pattern. This reduces the likelihood of and intensity of anxiety problems (American Psychological Association). On the other hand, biomedical therapy (Ch.16 Module 49) relies just on drugs and certain medical procedures. For Instance, the use of psychostimulants to reduce the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is well known to be successful, and many studies find that the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia are substantially reduced by the use of antipsychotic medications (Lieberman et al., 2005). With that being said, both have a balance in treatment and it’s effectiveness.
