POST 1:

Mixed methods use various ways to research a problem. The resource chosen used an example of mixed methods design in students in small group discussions online versus those students in small group discussions face-to-face.The research concluded there were some weaknesses in online small group discussions. The strength in the small group online discussion for students is that; every student does not contribute to the conversation however in small group face-to-face there is a whole class to respond to and engage.I suppose there is more pressure to respond face-to-face in the teacher’s presence. The response is in real time.

In human services, I would prefer both quantitative and qualitive research. In some cases of diverse populations, it may serve best. There are generally multiple problems and various unique issue.Just one answer as with quantitative research will not address a variety of problems.

The research example shown above explains the online students had time to think and be more thoughtful and focused in their discussions. They also did not have as much interaction with the teacher as the face-to-face students. The researchers found various ways students respond by trying various research strategies in mix-methods.

POST 2:

Share what you have learned about the mixed-methods strategy, including the strengths and weaknesses of this type of research design.

Using a Mixed Methods Research strategy allows the researcher to create a fuller understanding of a social problem by combining both statistical trends from gathered quantitative data with the participant view from the qualitative data. Catallo, Ciliska, & MacMillan (2013) stated “Mixed methods permit a deeper and richer understanding […] of phenomena or to provide a richer explanation of results” (Pg. 2). This method has design models such as; the Convergent design, Explanatory Sequential design, Exploratory design and the Advanced designs.

A mixed methods strategy is advantages in counterbalancing the weakness in numerical leaden quantitative data or potentially prejudiced qualitative data. Using a mixed method is advantages in presenting a well-rounded interpretation of the research question.

Weakness to a mixed-method include the use of “rigorous” substantial quantitative and qualitative analysis (Dr. J. Creswell; 2013). The process becomes arduous of time in collecting data from both methods and according to The Center for Innovation in Research and Teaching (CIRT), most researchers are not as familiar with mixed-method compound procedures.

·Explain whether you would prefer using the mixed-methods methodology if you go on to conduct human services research one day. Why or why not?

This writer is unfamiliar with Mixed Method methodology but can see the advantages of using such a method in human services. The method would add validity to qualitative research and the humanity to quantitative research with the potential to reach broader audiences.

·How were the quantitative and qualitative techniques employed in the study?

Catallo, Ciliska, & MacMillan (2013) used Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) and a grounded theory approach in an explanatory sequential mixed methods strategy. The researchers made adjustments to the grounded theory approach in areas to maintain a level of rigor.

·Why do you think the researcher chose a mixed-methods study over a complete quantitative or qualitative design? If you were the researcher, would you have also chosen to use the mixed-methods design? Why or why not?

The nature of the study is sensitive and not likely popular in some circles due to the nature. Choosing a mixed–method strategy would transform mundane statistical data into real people, giving the reader something to relate to; therefore to improve the understanding of the problem and broaden awareness.

Using this method was a wise choice and this writer sees the strengths in repeating this method. This would be used as a tool to advocate for funds and further study of the problem and the participants.
