——————————————————————————————————————

Having watched two episodes, it is time to compare/contrast. All societies in human history, past and present, have SPRITE:

Social (are there groups/classes in the society? How are distinctions made?)

Political (authority, power and rulers)

Intellectual (important ideas and practices)

Technological (tools to make life easier for humans)

Economic (how do most people earn a living?)/

Environmental (how do humans deal with their surroundings?)

The two Native societies you watched were no different.

——–

Question:

In complete and well-written paragraphs, use SPRITE and present to your colleagues the two societies you viewed.

—————–

Instructions: Read these

–You need to respond to/interact with two students before Sunday 9/1, 11.30 pm)

–Assume they have not seen the same episodes; it is your job to give as complete a description as possible of your two societies.

–DO NOT make this into an 8 page essay! Use SPRITE to focus your writing. You cannot write about everything, but whatever you write about, there is enough in these documentaries to allow you to provide a well-thought out series of paragraphs.

–For this assignment, I’m not imposing a word limit. However, be honest: if this were an essay, this would easily be 2-3 pages (or about 1500 words). I’m not asking for that, but if done properly, there should be a minimum of 500 words or so (again, this is a general guideline. On the other hand, two sentences is not enough)

Do not:

(a) use in your writing the following personal pronouns:  I/we/you (“I saw the episode on the Tainos,” is better written as, “The People Who Greeted Columbus” presented a Caribbean society, the Taino…”)

(b) forget that this is an academic space. Present yourself in your writing as what you are: professional and decent. Choose words carefully–keep slang, inappropriate or offensive language away.

–Spelling, grammar, word choice, and coherence DO matter (however, it’s our first week, so do not become obsessive.) As the semester progresses, if this is a problem, YOU must fix it, as I deduct up to 10 points. Edit and proofread.

–Make sure your font is not tiny. Set it to 12 (actually, 14 is even better for those who belong to the Four Eyes Club. Represent! LOL)

–I’ll be entering the discussion board throughout the week–if you see a comment from me, it is a good idea to read it over. Usually, it is asking for more clarification (in most cases, an additional sentence or two will suffice); If so, clarify before the deadline.

You need to respond to/interact with two students before Sunday 9/1, 11.30 pm). Try to respond to those who haven’t written about your societies–you may notice similar (or very different) patterns between these societies. I’m trying to have all eight societies represented to give us all a glimpse of life in what becomes Latin America before 1492
