b. What compromises were forged in the republic’s early decades to preserve peace?

c. Why did Southerners become more defensive about slavery in the 1830s, and how did they respond?

d. Why did the Mexican War and Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo usher in a new stage of crisis? What series of events between 1848 and 1860 led to deepening national divisions and ultimately to war?
