Movie Report

The Princess Diaries

The Princess Diaries is one of my favorite movies from my childhood.

The movie begins with Mia Thermopolis, the main character, who is a sophomore student at Albert Einstein High School in the Manhattan borough of New York City (differs from the movie, which the setting takes place in San Francisco). She is the daughter of Helen Thermopolis and Phillippe Renaldi and the princess to the throne of Genovia. Genovia is a fictional country in Europe. The problem is that Mia does not know she is princess of Genovia until she is 15, when her grandmother Clarisse Marie Grimaldi Renaldi, queen of Genovia tells her. Mia is shocked and cannot believe that her parents hid this from her for so long. However, they explained that they did not tell her because they wanted her to have a normal life until the age of 18. Eventually she accepts her throne to become princess and at the end moves to Genovia.

Physical Development

Mia is about to turn 16 but looks at lot younger. She is well known for being nerdy, sarcastic and un-girly personality. She is 5ft 9, skinny with curly long hair and glasses. Mia is one of the girls who physically matured later. In addition, she Girls who mature later may be overlooked in dating and other mixed-sex activities during junior-high school or middle school, and they might relatively low social-status (Feldman, 364). As Feldman mentioned, Mia is of low-social status when she is not yet known as a princess. She only hangs out with her friend Lily and her brother Michael (who she has a crush on since first grade). Though after her grandmother requested her to get a makeover, she becomes more popular and looks like her age. Mia is now well known but is going through a lot of stress adapting to this change. She did not want to be noticed as a princess because she wanted to keep it a secret. Yet, her stylist who did her makeover was the one who let the news out. Feldman describes different ways of meeting the challenges of stress during adolescence. Coping is also aided by the presence of social support, assistance and comfort supplied by others (Feldman, 372). When Mia receives the news that she is a princess she does not know how to handle it. She feels different emotions at the same time. Especially anger towards her parents and undergoes a lot of stress when trying to hide the news from her best friend Lily and the entire school. Mia looks for social support with her mother and grandmother.

During softball practice she is not good at swinging the bat. She cannot catch and can barely run fast. Instead she is very clumsy but gets mad when her classmates and P.E begin to stare and make fun of her because she cannot hit a simple ball. Furthermore, when she practices soccer she is the same. For instance, they placed her as goalie and she cannot stop one ball from coming inside the net. Instead Mia protects herself. It is evident that Mia is not very athletic. She does not have the strength to hit the softball with a bat. She tells her P.E instructor it is because she is a “girl.” For the reason boys are typically more athletic and stronger than girls. Since, she is going puberty her hormones are all over the place. In girls, the emotions produced by hormone production are somewhat different: higher levels of hormones associated with anger and depression (Feldman, 362). As I mentioned earlier, she get upset very quick. Particularly when she is being told how to play each of the sports properly.

Cognitive Development

Mia is a very wise and sweet girl. When she found out that her father was a prince and that she was a princess, she did not go out running to tell everyone that she will one day rule a country. Instead she continued to be the same person as much as she could. Also, before telling her best-friend Lily she made sure she would not hurt her feelings. Nevertheless, she was stubborn to understand why her mother did not tell her earlier that she was a princess. She repetitively questioned her and argued about it for days. Feldman explain that the formal operation on adolescents thinking is that they become more argumentative. They enjoy using abstract reasoning to poke holes in others explanations, and their increased abilities to think critically make them acutely sensitive to parents and teachers perceived their shortcomings (Feldman, 368). It was a challenge for Mia’s mother and her grandmother to help her comprehend the reasons why they decided to keep these secret. It was understandable, her life was going to change completely. She was raised in a different culture with different beliefs compared to what her father and grandmother were raised in. Therefore, Mia had to adapt to a different customs and culture. She had to take princess lessons at her grandmother’s house every day after school and attend royal events.

On the other hand, Mia’s grandmother gave her the diary she and her father used to write on for her to continue to do the same thing. Yet, she would write about her life as a royal princess. Moreover, Mia is a curious young girl and beings to adapt to this new lifestyle. Especially after the news is out. Feldman describes this as, adolescents grow increasingly sophisticated in their understanding of problems, their ability to grasp abstract concepts and to think hypothetically, and their comprehension of the possibilities inherent in situations (Feldman, 369). After Mia read the letter her father composed to her to read on her 16th birthday it made her reflect and realize that her mother was right all along for keeping the secret.

Social/Personality Development

Mia, before becoming a princess was invisible to everyone and she wanted to continue to keep it this way. She was made fun of becomes of how she looked. Mia was just a sweet, shy and little geeky girl. Mia had a crush on one of the popular girl’s boyfriends from her high school. She dreamed of a fairy tale kiss where her foot would pop up. Yet, she never dreamed of being like the other students at her school. She always wanted to be invisible because that is what she was known for. According to Feldman, the period during which teenagers seek to determine what is unique and distinctive about themselves is called identity-versus identity- confusion stage (Feldman, 416). She knew that she was different and accepted it. When she had an issue, like any teenager, she would rely on her friends, Lily and Lily’s brother Michael. Once they knew the truth she would always run to them for emotional support. For instance, when Mia explained to Lily what had happened to her at the party the guy she liked invited her to the other day. The paparazzi caught her at the party and the guy gave her a kiss to just get a moment of attention. She felt betrayed and extremely angry. The reliance on peers to help adolescents define their identities and learn to form relationships is the link between this stage of psychological development and the next stage (Feldman, 417).

Even though Mia relied on her friends more than her mom, this did not make their relationship distant. She also cried in her mom’s arms just like a little girl when this happened. I would define Mia’s personality at the beginning of the story as under-controlled because she considered herself invisible, however after she felt more confident about herself because she did not what other people thought anymore. Therefore, at the end of the story I would consider her personality as over controlled. Adolescents increasingly seek autonomy independence, and a sense of control over their lives (Feldman, 423). For instance, at the Genovia ball she admitted she was not afraid of public speaking and could not feel more honored to be the princess of Genovia.

It is typical for Mia to be different and unique in her high school. She is a sweet and smart girl who was made fun of by her classmates. It was normal for her to feel embarrassed and invisible. However, what was atypical was the fact that she accepted it and did not do anything about it until she found out that she was a princess. Also, it is atypical for a high school student to suddenly become famous and move to a country to rule as a princess. In addition, it was atypical for a teenager who was very sure of how she wanted to continue to live high school changed so drastically. Overall, this movie reminded me about my childhood and I would certainly watch/read the entire series all over again.
